What Perplexity Is (and Isn't)

Perplexity gets lumped in with "AI chatbots," but that undersells what it actually is — and undersells why it's genuinely worth knowing on top of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude.

Perplexity is an AI-native answer engine, built around search first. Where ChatGPT and Gemini started as chat assistants and added web search later, Perplexity was built from the start to answer questions by searching, reading multiple sources, and citing exactly where each part of its answer came from. That citation habit is the whole point — it's the tool built to show its work, not just state an answer.

The tiers

• Free — a real, usable tier: a limited number of Pro Searches and Deep Research queries per day, file uploads with modest limits.
• Pro (~$20/month) — meaningfully higher usage limits, access to multiple top-tier underlying models (not locked to one company's models), image and video generation.
• Max (~$200/month) — everything in Pro, aimed at the heaviest individual users, including Perplexity's most advanced agentic capabilities.
• Enterprise Pro / Enterprise Max (custom per-seat pricing) — admin controls, SSO, stronger data-retention guarantees, and centralized billing for organizations.

What Perplexity is not

• It's not primarily a creative writing or brainstorming tool the way ChatGPT is often used — it's built for "find this out and show me where it came from."
• It's not a replacement for reading the actual source when something matters — citations make verification easy, so use that, don't skip it just because a citation exists.
• It's not just a search engine either. It genuinely reasons over what it finds, synthesizes across multiple sources, and can do multi-step research, not just return links.
