What Meta AI Is (and Isn't)

Meta AI is probably the AI assistant you've been closest to without realizing it — it's built directly into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, apps a huge number of people already have open every day.

Meta AI's actual logged-out interface at meta.ai

Meta AI is Meta's AI assistant, built on its own Llama model family, available as a standalone app, at meta.ai, and embedded inside WhatsApp, Instagram (DMs and comments), Facebook, and Messenger. You can message it directly like a contact in WhatsApp, or bring it into a group chat by @-mentioning it.

Pricing — genuinely free, no paid tier in most markets

Meta AI has no subscription and no premium plan in most places — real, usable limits, not a stripped-down trial: roughly 100,000 tokens a month (about 75,000 words), 25 image generations a day, 60 voice exchanges a day, and unlimited video generation, across all the apps it lives in. (A paid "Meta AI+" tier for people who exceed these limits has appeared in some markets, but it's not the norm.)

What Meta AI is not

  • It's not a separate destination you have to remember to visit — its entire design is being where you already are, inside apps you already have open.
  • It's not the same privacy posture as this library's other tools in one specific, important way — covered directly and factually in the security lesson, not glossed over.
  • It's not something to skip learning just because of the above. It's genuinely useful specifically because of how deeply it's embedded in messaging apps most people already use daily — worth understanding with eyes open.

Open WhatsApp or Instagram and see if you can find Meta AI already available to message directly — most accounts already have it without any setup.
