What Gemini Is (and Isn't)
Gemini is Google's AI assistant — and if your work already runs through Gmail, Docs, Drive, or Sheets, it's probably the AI tool with the most direct access to your actual work, whether you've turned it on or not.

Gemini is Google's general-purpose AI model, available as its own app (gemini.google.com) and built directly into Google Workspace. That second part is the real difference from ChatGPT or Claude: Gemini doesn't just live in a separate chat window — it's woven into the tools you may already use every day.
The tiers, plainly (verified directly against Google's own pricing page)
- Free — real capability, not a stripped-down demo: current Gemini models, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, and 15 GB of storage.
- Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) — roughly double the usage limits of Free, plus video generation and deeper Gmail/Docs integration, 400 GB storage.
- Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) — 4x the usage of Free, higher access to the strongest current models and Deep Research, a coding agent (Jules), YouTube Premium Lite, 5 TB storage.
- Google AI Ultra ($99.99-$199.99/month, two sub-tiers) — up to 20x the usage of Pro, first access to the most advanced reasoning modes, 20+ TB storage. Built for serious power users, not typical office work.
The distinction that actually matters for security (covered fully in Lesson 4): consumer Gemini vs. Google Workspace. If your company uses Google Workspace, Gemini there operates under a materially different, stronger privacy commitment than a personal Gemini account — regardless of which paid tier that personal account is on.
What Gemini is not
- It's not just "Google's ChatGPT." Its real advantage is depth of integration with Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Calendar — features that don't exist for a tool with no access to those products.
- It's not the same privacy posture everywhere. A personal Gemini account and a company Workspace account handle your data differently by default — this is the single most important thing to get right before using it for real work.
- It's not going to replace checking your own sources. Same rule as every other AI tool in this library.
▶️ Before the next lesson
If your workplace uses Google Workspace, find out whether Gemini is already turned on for your organization (ask IT, or check for a Gemini icon in Gmail/Docs) — you'll want to know this before Lesson 4.
