What ChatGPT Is (and Isn't)

If you've only used the free version once or twice, your picture of ChatGPT is probably out of date — and if you've never used it at all, the tier names alone are confusing enough to keep people away. Let's fix both.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant — a chat-based tool you talk to in plain English to write, research, analyze, plan, and build things. Like Claude, it's a general-purpose AI model wrapped in a product. Unlike Claude, it's the one most of the world has already heard of — which means your coworkers, clients, and vendors are probably already using it, whether or not you are.

The tiers, plainly

OpenAI has restructured this more than once, so if you looked at ChatGPT's pricing a year ago, forget what you remember:

  • Free — usable, but slower, with the tightest usage limits and access to older/lighter models.
  • Go ($8/month) — a low-cost tier aimed at people who want more room than Free without paying for Plus.
  • Plus ($20/month) — higher usage limits, the full current model lineup, image generation, and Advanced Voice Mode.
  • Pro ($200/month) — the highest usage ceiling, aimed at heavy daily users.
  • Business ($20-25/seat) — this is the old "ChatGPT Team" tier, renamed in 2025. Same features and pricing as before — just a new name on your invoice. Built for small teams: shared workspace, admin controls, and (importantly) no training on your data by default.
  • Enterprise — custom-priced, sales-negotiated. Adds SSO, audit logs, data residency options, and the strongest data controls (more on this in the security lesson).

Why this matters for you: if a client or vendor mentions "ChatGPT Team," they mean Business — same thing, old name. And if you're evaluating this for a company, Business is usually the right starting point, not Enterprise — Enterprise contracts typically require a substantial minimum seat count.

What ChatGPT is not

  • It's not the same product it was even six months ago. Model versions, feature names, and even tier names change often — this course will get a "verified current as of" date for exactly that reason.
  • It's not automatically private just because it's a well-known company. Free and Go/Plus/Pro accounts are used to improve OpenAI's models by default unless you turn that off — covered in Lesson 4.
  • It's not a replacement for judgment. Like every AI tool, it can sound confident while being wrong. Verify anything that matters before you act on it.

Why learn a second AI tool at all

You don't have to pick a favorite. Different tools have different strengths, different people on your team may already have accounts, and knowing your way around more than one is genuinely useful — the same way knowing both Excel and Google Sheets doesn't hurt you.

▶️ Before the next lesson

Open ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) if you haven't already, even on the free tier. You don't need an account tour — just get it open so the next lesson's examples are things you can actually try.
