Perplexity Pro: Who It's For and How to Set It Up
Perplexity Pro is the paid individual tier — one person, one subscription, no company admin console attached. If you're evaluating AI tools for your whole organization, this is almost never the right starting point: unlike Claude or ChatGPT, Perplexity has no in-between "Team" tier to grow into — the next step up from Pro is Enterprise, a genuinely different product (own setup guide covers it). If you're a single professional who wants Perplexity's citation-first research beyond what Free allows, Pro is exactly the right tier.
What Pro actually costs and includes, compared to Free and Max:

Pro is $20/month. Free is $0/month (a real, usable tier — limited daily usage, citations in every answer, basic AI models). Max is $200/month, aimed at the heaviest individual users. Pro sits in between: expanded access to Perplexity Computer (Perplexity's agentic task-execution feature), 4,000 bonus credits, Deep Research, access to multiple top-tier underlying AI models rather than being locked to one company's, the ability to create polished documents and apps from inside a chat, and meaningfully higher usage limits and memory than Free.
Pros:
- Multi-model access, not locked to one lab. Pro's model picker lets you choose between several top underlying models from different AI companies inside the same interface — a structural difference from single-vendor tools.
- Deep Research is included, not gated behind a separate purchase — genuinely useful for "get me oriented on this topic" questions, not just quick lookups.
- Perplexity Computer is bundled in, not a separate product — agentic task execution (research, document creation, lightweight apps) as part of the $20/month price.
- Citation-first design, with real usage headroom. Same verifiable-sourcing habit Perplexity is built around at every tier, now without hitting Free's daily limits on anything but the heaviest days.
Cons:
- It's a personal account, full stop. No SSO, no admin console, no centralized billing, no way for your company to see usage or revoke access the moment someone leaves. If more than one person at your org needs this, you're managing N separate personal subscriptions with zero central visibility — see the "Why Your Company Needs a Secured AI Account" course for exactly why that's a real risk, not just an inconvenience.
- No in-between Team tier. If Pro outgrows a single person, there's no lighter-weight org plan to step into the way some competitors offer — the next tier up is Enterprise, a meaningfully bigger commitment (own setup guide).
- Training is on by default. Free, Pro, and Max all use your activity to improve Perplexity's models unless you manually turn off the "AI data retention" toggle in Account Settings → Preferences — and turning it off only stops future activity from training, it doesn't retroactively remove what's already been used. Enterprise's no-training guarantee is opt-out by default; Pro's is opt-in.
- $20/seat/month with no volume discount. Five people on Pro individually costs the same per seat as one person — there's no Team-tier pricing break to grow into here.
How to sign up:

- Go to perplexity.ai — the signup panel appears automatically for a new visitor.
- Choose Continue with Google or Continue with Apple (fastest if you already use either), enter your email and choose Continue with email, or use Single sign-on (SSO) if your organization already has that configured on Perplexity.
- Once you're signed in on Free, go to Pricing (perplexity.ai/pricing) and choose Get Pro on the Perplexity Pro card — you'll be walked through payment inside Perplexity's own checkout.
Perplexity also ships a desktop app, iPhone and Android apps, and its own Comet browser (free to use even without Pro, and covered in the "Perplexity — Introductory Field Guide" course) — Pro applies automatically once you're signed in on any of them.
What this guide doesn't cover yet: the actual post-signup billing/checkout screens, account settings, and the Comet browser or app install flows — those require a real, paid, logged-in session to capture accurately, and haven't been screenshotted yet. This page will be updated with that once that access exists, rather than guessing at what those screens look like.
If you're setting this up for more than one person: stop here and look at Perplexity Enterprise instead (own setup guide) — there's no in-between Team tier for Perplexity, so Enterprise is the only path to centralized billing, SSO, and the guardrails covered in the "Why Your Company Needs a Secured AI Account" course that Pro simply doesn't have.
